JONAS: So, let’s start with some definitions to get us on the same page. The term “singularity” was popularized by mathematician and computer scientist Vernor Vinge in the 1990s. It refers to a hypothetical future moment when artificial intelligence surpasses human intelligence in such a way that it triggers rapid and unpredictable technological growth.
AMY: And happening so fast that it changes everything—work, society, even what it means to be human. It sounds like science fiction, but this idea is debated seriously across industries.
JONAS: Exactly. The singularity revolves around three concepts: Artificial General Intelligence, or AGI, which means AI that can perform any intellectual task a human can; then superintelligence, which is the level beyond AGI, where AI vastly outperforms human cognitive abilities; and the singularity itself, the point when this leap happens.

JONAS: Exactly. Predictions vary wildly—from decades to centuries, or even skepticism that it’s achievable. The complexity of human intelligence and consciousness poses enormous challenges.
AMY: I’ve worked with automotive companies exploring AI for autonomous driving. Even there, despite billions invested, we're grappling with specific problems like edge cases, safety, and ethics—not building a general intelligence.
JONAS: The singularity debate also raises ethical and societal questions. For example, how do we ensure AI's goals align with human values if it becomes superintelligent?
AMY: I’ve seen this play out with AI ethics boards and governance frameworks. The risk of unintended consequences is very real, especially in industries like healthcare or finance where decisions impact lives and livelihoods.
